Vanity Fair, In Memoriam: Christopher Hitchens, 1949–2011

Oh my god. This is so shocking. Even though I knew he was sick. I just can’t believe he’s gone. I did not agree with most of his opinions after he made his shift to the right, but he was an important and talented writer. And no one should die this young, of such a terrible disease. My heart goes out to his family. Rest in peace, Christopher.

‘Gay in America’: Photographs of Gay Men From All 50 States

Faces of LOVE. This is LOVE, people. This is family. This is everything that is good and hopeful. My god, look at that little girl’s face. She is loved, and she knows it.

The Way We Live Now: Debtors’ Prisons are making a comeback, reports Kevin Drum. When did the 21st century turn into a bad Dickens novel?

I can hear the right’s response now: ‘Well, if they can’t pay their bills, they should be in jail!”

When I’m depressed, discouraged, and completely cynical about the possibility of anything good coming out of humanity, looking at a photograph like this makes me feel better. There are no human beings in that photograph, only grass, earth, a huge tree with spreading branches reaching out like arms to hold everything within reach, and what looks like the light of Heaven itself pouring down.
